In a single static shot, female hands are seen arranging a number of colorful amateur flower photographs throughout a book by Nobuyoshi Araki. In this book, he juxtaposes beautiful color prints of artfully displayed flowers with morbid black and white stills from an early film that had been damaged due to insufficient archiving.
Sound and dialogue were added after the filming, implicating an intimate scene beyond the pages of the book and the frame of the film. While the woman engages in her quirky “ikebana” ritual, a man is heard preparing tea. In an enigmatic word play superimposed with the buzz of a slow morning, the couple juggle with city names and numbers. By the time we realize that a quiz is being played out, the multilayered performance ends with the temperature in Moskow guessed correctly.

“We used to play the guessing game every morning with the world map of temperatures in Süddeutsche Zeitung. Instead of tea, we prepared cups of coffee.
It is not surprising that 10 years later, the temperature guessing has entirely lost its innocence. Just as much as the flower photos inside Araki’s book are speaking to us in a different way.”
