Summer in the South of France. On her way to Nice, a young hitchhiker is given a lift by a pleasant 40-year old local. Absorbed by the scenery, the girl admires the beauty and colours of Provence passing by the car window. The driver suggests taking a detour over Mont Sainte Victoire: he could show her the place where Cézanne used to paint. And while the young hitchhiker fantasizes about being in the world of Cézanne, the man loses himself in her youth…

The film is an autobiographical account of an incident which happened during one of my first solo hitchhiking trips from Lyon to Nice in 1982. In the following years of becoming an artist, I thought of this “detour” as an initiation. I had to make a choice in order to emerge unscathed. From then on, my devotion for nature, for landscape, color and light was always also a cultural one, never again innocent.
